If you are interested in the finest Marlin fishing year round; Cabo San Lucas, Mexico is the place to go. With an abundance of Marlin populations, Cabo San Lucas is known as the “Marlin capital of the world”. The beautiful blue waters of the Baja Peninsula bubble with bountiful Striped, Black, and Blue Marlin.

An abundance of fish:

Los Cabos is not only home to Marlin; a copious of other fish inhabit the surrounding waters. If looking for that prize winning catch of Mahi Mahi, Tuna, or Snapper; you are in the right place. However, the abundance of a particular species of fish depends on the season. Although Marlin can be caught year round, the best time to fish for Striped Marlin is in the winter, Blue and Black is in the summer and fall. In the summer you are more likely to find Tuna, Sailfish, Dorado, and Wahoo. Striped Marlin and yellowtail are most plentiful in the winter and spring.

Best fishing areas:

There are many places around the coast of Cabo San Lucas that are ideal for fishing.
Most of the best fishing areas are located within 40 miles of the port. There is also a spot that is two miles from the old lighthouse near a 600 ft ledge. The Tinaje Trough is a deep underwater canyon on the Pacific side of the cape, where you can find many different species of fish. Located between the San Jaime Bank (the deepest point of the Tinaje Trough), and the Golden Gate Bank (12 miles to the north) is the pathway of underwater currents. This is the best place to fish in Cabo. These warm currents carry enormous amounts of Skipjack Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, and Blue Marlin.

Plan your charter ahead of time:

Charter boats provide an excellent way to tackle the true Los Cabos fishing experience. There are over 350 charters that operate out of the marina. There are many types of charters offered; you can find anything from 21 ft center consoles to 100+ ft luxury yachts. Some of these charters offer all inclusive packages. Whether you are an expert who knows all there is to know about fishing, or a novice casting a line for the first time; there is something to suit everyone’s fishing needs. Depending on how much money you want to spend, how many people will be traveling with you, and how long you want to go for; there are many options to accommodate your needs. To insure availability of your charter boat; be sure to make reservations as far in advance as possible.

There are a couple of things to take care of when setting off on a fabulous fishing excursion in Cabo San Lucas. You will need to purchase a fishing license in order to fish. These can be purchased the day of your fishing trip at the marina for $12/day or $25/week.

Sign up for fishing tournaments:

Cabo San Lucas holds some of the most well-known fishing tournaments in the world. Most of the tournaments take place in October. These include; the Annual Los Cabo Billfish Tournament, the Pete Lopiccola Charity Tournament for cancer research, and the Bisbee Offshore Challenge. The largest tournament that takes place in Cabo is the Bisbee Black and Blue Marlin Tournament. The Western Outdoor News’ Mercury Tuna Jackpot Tournament is scheduled early in November. The summer months bring the Rolex/IGFA offshore Championship in May, the Lucas Billfish Challenge in June, and the Mercury Light Line Fly Fishing World Championships in July.

If catching plentiful amounts of world-class Marlin in a tropical paradise sounds like something you would like to do; take a trip down to southern tip of the Baja Peninsula to fish the warm waters of Cabo San Lucas.

Little that most fishermen know, East Grand Lake provides one of the best salmon fishing in Maine. During the past few years, the lake has produced salmon weighing over eight pounds and most importantly it is possible for you to catch 15 to 30 legal salmon in just a day’s fishing, something that you can’t easily find somewhere else. What could be better than that? that way, you’ll have a whole day of fun and excitement. Do you think you fish 15-30 salmon a day? if your limit is within that range, might as well spend your salmon fishing in Maine.

Take note of the salmon fishing season in Maine which starts in late April and lasts until June in order for you make your plans ahead of time and reserve for a fishing vacation. however, during the summer where the water is warmer, particularly in the months of July and August, salmon tend to go much deeper into the lake as they hate warm waters. Therefore, you have to do something if you want to hook them. The preferred salmon fishing technique during these months is drift fishing, in which you use a lead-core line or downriggers. also, you can use streamer flies, wobblers and minnows since live smelts are not available in warmer months.

For as long as you can hold on to your cravings for salmon fishing, warmer months will surely measure you patience. so, if you don’t have a long stretch of patience, wait until cooler months come. in September, salmon fishing in Maine is back in action where in you will not be forced to do extra efforts or develop certain fishing techniques just to boat some salmon. Make sure to have your reservation earlier and choose the cooler months so that you’ll have as much good time as possible.

admin - Ken Maurer column: The right tool for the task » Sports » The Daily Item, Sunbury, PA (n/18/2012)

Did you ever take notice … that if you need a blade screwdriver, all you can find is phillips head, or visa versa? I carry a multi-tool on my belt most of the time, and it has both, neither of which do a real good job. Sometimes you have to break down and just go get the right tool, in my case, after a couple of bloody knuckles. the same holds true in hunting and fishing. Spring gobbler hunting a short time ago, daylight found me looking at old betsy with disdain. I had forgotten to replace the grouse hunting improved cylinder choke with my extra-full turkey choke. I can tell because the extra-full choke sticks out of the end of the barrel. I hunted two mornings with the improved cylinder. when you have to work and you try to squeeze hunting into the picture, you make a mental note (dim, in my case) to replace the choke tube next time. it took a couple of daybreaks before I remembered to screw in the turkey choke. I was fortunate, because the shot I ended up taking definitely was exactly for an extra-full choke. You never know what you might need. I recall a tournament a few years back. we hadn’t caught a bass on a spinnerbait for weeks. as an afterthought, I tossed a spinnerbait rod and a box of spinnerbaits in the boat anyway. that day, of course, they were tearing up spinnerbaits. Trout fishermen can drive themselves to distraction with not having the right tools, or in their case, bait or lure. You’ve seen the guy. His vest is bloated with mealworms, waxworms, redworms, butterworms, nine colors of powerbait, three colors of salmon eggs and he’s dragging a minnow bucket with rosy reds, fatheads and male redfins. Uh-oh, they’re hitting pink spinners today, and all three boxes of spinners are back in the truck. OK, that’s a little extreme, but you get the picture. and then there’s the fly fisherman. if you’re a novice and only have a few flies in one box, you had better hope you got some good, timely advice or you’ll be going ape nuts with the credit card the next time you hit the tackle shop. Then there’s the veteran. He has every orifice stuffed with fly boxes and could more than adequately stock several tackle shops. however. tonight they are hitting a size 18 gootbarken mollytail, and he has none. Maybe that old-timer with the mini-fly tying kit he saw along the bank a ways back was on to something. It’s easy to forget stuff — my wife can attest to the ease with which I sometimes forget things. Necessity is the motherhood of invention, it is said, and sometimes you just can’t beat flipping over a rock and using mother nature’s provisions. Email comments to kenrose @tds.net.

admin - Fishing in Pouring Rain (n/18/2012)

Sometimes a good down pour is what’s needed to turn fish on, and there have been many occasions to prove just that. in my younger years, it didn’t bother me, but as I’m getting older the bones can sure feel the dampness afterwards. If dressed appropriately with Gortex rain gear you can reap rewards from Mother Nature’s dinner bell

The timing has to be right With a lengthy consistent weather window it makes for good ‘get out there and fish’ weather. when there is a quick weather change, like a downpour, it’s enough to get the fish aggressively feeding and the action is phenomenal

I remember a particular day fishing for Pike in a reservoir. The bite was not good at all and it made for tough fishing. It was muggy and hot and from the distance came the threat of black clouds. It was one of those instances where I watched the whole scenario unfold before my eyes. As the storm approached I thought I would pack it in and get out of the water, but with my trusty Gortex rain gear on board, I braved through it. when the down pour arrived the Pike fishing was absolutely on fire There was a fish for every cast Will I ever learn From experiences like these I welcome rain storms with open arms and ‘bails’

If you notice storms arriving in the distance with lightning and thunder the best thing to do then is ‘get out’ and wait it out, at least until the lightning is done anyway It’s important to remember that it always works best after days of consistent weather.

A little rain never hurt anyone. come to think of it, a down pour never hurt anyone either especially when its fish after fish action Hey, at least we’re fishing

admin - The Allure of Fishing With Bamboo Fly Rods (n/18/2012)

Gather up any group of fly fishermen (and women) and you’ll soon hear them talk about their memories of fishing with their father and grandfather. I’ve heard more than one story of going through granddad’s fishing gear after he died and finding his beloved bamboo fly rod. these heirloom fly rods are most likely still functional, but are probably best restored or kept as is and displayed above your mantle as a reminder of fly fishing’s earlier days.

Are bamboo fly rods a thing of the past?

But are are bamboo fly rods a thing of the past? On the contrary, these rods are still being made today. you can buy one brand new from either the ‘big name’ rod makers like Orvis, Hardy or Leonard. you can also buy one that is hand-crafted over many hours by individual craftsman. making a bamboo fly rod from scratch takes anywhere from 40-60 hours of attentive detail work. you can imagine that every hand-crafted bamboo fly rod is an individual masterpiece. Selling one must be like selling a piece of the makers soul But knowing that his hand-crafted fly rod will become not only a functional fishing piece, but also a new family heirloom makes the process of parting with one just a bit easier.

I can hear some objections now.

My carbon fiber rod is made of the latest in technology. why would I want a bamboo fly rod?

Bamboo fly rods aren’t for everyone. If all you want is the latest CAD designed space-aged material technology to fish with, then there are plenty of models produced each year to choose from. however if you want a material that is warm to the touch, glows golden in the sunlight, and brings you closer to your natural surroundings, then a bamboo fly rod is for you.

Where can you find bamboo fly rods?

Even today, bamboo fly rods are being crafted by individuals in their own homes and workshops. these handcrafted rods can sell for upwards of $1000-$2000 dollars, and frequently come with a lifetime repair guarantee by the maker. most of the major rod manufacturers also make bamboo fly rods. But you can also find used, antique and vintage bamboo rods for sale online. The condition of these older rods varies from those that are coming unwound and unglued to rods that have been refurbished and are in excellent condition. whether you choose to hang the rod on the wall for display or take it to your favorite stream for fishing is up to you.

admin - Last Dance (n/18/2012)

Me and the Mitfords are in mourning here at Disco Farm after the news that Donna Summer died today.

Donna on the radio.

I love Donna Summer.  her “Bad Girls” was the first tape (yes, music came on tape back in the ’70s) I bought with my own money. I remember going to the shop and choosing it from the rack and handing over my hard-saved cash for the cassette. Obviously, the subtext of the song “Bad Girls”, which was about a whole lot of prostitutes, was lost on me at nine (thank goodness), but Donna’s disco beat was not. And more than 30 years on, when I’m having a bad day, I put “On the Radio” on my iPod and have a living room disco to cheer myself up. she was and is Disco with a capital D.

So thanks Donna, for so many disco-rrific times. Love to love you baby.
